16th American Peptide Symposium Logo |
Surely one of the most unforgettable sights in the the Twin Cities is the "Spoonbridge and Cherry" by Claes Oldenburg and Coosje van Bruggen, which is on display at the Sculpture Garden of the Walker Art Center on the outskirts of downtown Minneapolis. This art, and the background skyline bathed in the glow of a typically spectacular June sunrise, have inspired the logo of the 16th American Peptide Symposium. The cherry has been replaced by the ball-and-stick representation of a peptide bond. The ripple shape of the spoon handle represents the mighty Mississippi River, which has its source a mere 200 miles north at Lake Itasca, and is already 175 yards wide by the time it bisects the campus of the Symposium host, the University of Minnesota.
