Why is everyone applauding except the man on the left? (click here for identifications). Well, it seems that Professor George Barany (not shown in photo) has just introduced into evidence an autobiographical sketch written by the 1999 Merrifield Award recipient back in 1963 when he was an undergraduate student in the University of Minnesota Chemistry Department laboratory of Professor Wayland E. Noland (not shown in this photo, but readily found elsewhere in these pages).
