Frequently Asked Questions

The Department of Chemistry at the University of Minnesota seeks to promote and reward Excellence in its Graduate Program.  To this end we will be offering up to three fellowships to support research in the Spring and Summer semesters of mid-program Ph.D. students in the Chemistry and/or Chemical Physics Ph.D. programs.

Support:  A 25% Graduate Assistantship for the 2011 Spring and Summer semesters, paid at the standard Department of Chemistry TA rate plus a $4,500 bonus payment.  It is expected that the research advisor will provide support for the remaining 25% of the student’s appointment at the 2010-2011 Department of Chemistry TA rate.

Eligibility.   This program is open to all Fourth Year Ph.D. students in the Chemistry or Chemical Physics Ph.D. programs at the University of Minnesota that have achieved advanced status and expect to defend their thesis no later than the end of Fall semester 2012.  Students that already hold a major award that covers >25% of their appointment for the 2011 Spring and Summer semesters are not eligible for this award. There are no restrictions with regard to research area or nationality.  Applicants from underrepresented groups are particularly encouraged to apply.

Application:  Applicants should submit five copies of the following: a CV (including their GPA), a one page description of their research and a one page letter of support from their Ph.D. advisor.  Submit all materials to Nancy Thao in 115 Smith Hall.

Due Date:  Dec. 14, 2010

Note:  The candidates that Chemistry will nominate for the 2011-2012 U of M Doctoral Dissertation Fellowships (DDF) will be chosen from the applicants for this award.  If you would like to be considered for a DDF make sure you apply for this program.  Students that are not eligible for the Excellence award because they hold another major award but would like to be nominated for a DDF should submit an application with a notation stating that they are ineligible for the current competition.  More information about the Graduate School DDF program can be found at:
