Sonnet
XIV
(for
Michelle)
Did Orwell's novel bear a name less top-
Ical than 1984
perhaps
This year no one would look for hidden traps;
But as it is a number of us stop
To glance behind our backs and wonder where
Big Brother hides to snare us with our thought
And bind us with our secrets 'til we're caught
In psychoprisons--sunk to hopeless prayer.
But I tell you I have no fear of this
For I have greeted New Year's with a kiss,
And with the touch of lips I take new faith
That Orwell's greatest demon's but a wraith
A government of lies can't rise above
The strength of those with hearts, clear eyes, and
love.
