Doctoral Thesis Excellence Award deadline: December 31

The Department of Chemistry has created a University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry Award for Doctoral Thesis Excellence. The purpose of this award is to recognize an outstanding graduate student in the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry, as illustrated by doctoral thesis research.

Eligibility:

The graduate student nominee must have formally submitted to the Graduate School a completed doctorate (Ph.D.) dissertation in chemistry within the calendar year preceding the deadline for receipt of nominations. The award will recognize only work done while the nominee was a graduate student. The award will be granted regardless of race, gender, age, religion, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, presence of disabilities, and educational background. Each year, only one nomination is allowed per faculty adviser.

Nomination Procedure:

A nomination consists of

  1. a 500-word nomination letter from the doctoral adviser(s);
  2. a two-page synopsis of the nominee's doctorate (Ph.D.) dissertation written by the nominee;
  3. a two-page curriculum vitae; and
  4. a 500-word supporting letter appraising the significance of the thesis work from a non-advising faculty member within or outside the University of Minnesota.

All documents must be in English and submitted electronically as a single PDF to the Department of Chemistry Awards Committee (chaynes@umn.edu) by 5 p.m. CST on Monday, December 31, 2012.

Award:

The graduate student awardee will be determined by the awards committee in consultation with the Department of Chemistry Director of Graduate Studies and selected faculty members chosen on the basis of their expertise and interest. The awardee will receive an honorarium from the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry for $500. In addition, the awardee's name will be added to a Department-held plaque recognizing annual winners of this award. The awardee will be featured on the department's website and in the department's newsletter. As appropriate, winners will be invited to return to the department as an honored seminar speaker. The winner and adviser will be strongly encouraged to apply for the University of Minnesota "Best Dissertation" Award as well as the American Chemical Society's Nobel Laureate Signature Award for Graduate Education in Chemistry, as eligibility permits.
