Top Bananas

This "early-week level" puzzle was on the verge of being published in the mainstream media when something about one of the answer words rubbed a certain unknown higher-up the wrong way. Since our sensibilities are not nearly as exalted, we are delighted to post the puzzle, title and all, as its constructor's debut on our pages. After completing the puzzle (spoiler), you may be amused further by clicking here vs. here (20-Across), here vs. here (32-Across), here vs. here (43-Across), and here vs. here (58-Across).

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. David Hanson, Michael Hanko, Brent Hartzell, Martin Herbach, Tom Pepper, Paul Schoenholz, and Tom Williams reviewed the puzzle before it was posted, and some of their suggestions improved it.
