4 Broadway

by Martin Ashwood-Smith

This themeless, "late-weeke level" difficulty puzzle (16x15), featuring an amazing quadruple stack in the middle, was sent to me by legendary constructor Martin Ashwood-Smith after Will Shortz decided one of the quad-crossing words was too obscure for publication. After completing the puzzle (spoiler), click here to read Martin's account of what the issues were, and how he further modified the puzzle to meet the needs of our pages. We are particularly delighted to post this puzzle on the same day that Martin has a different quadruple stack published in the New York Times.

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. A few members of our team [Noam Elkies, Todd Gross, Michael Hanko, David Hanson, Brent Hartzell, Martin Herbach, and your host] beta tested the puzzle and were pleased when MAS graciously accepted some of our suggestions for changes in portions of the fill and several of the clues.
