Squared Puzzle for Squares

This ingenious "early-week level" puzzle was submitted to Peter Gordon of the (now-defunct) New York Sun, and (after editing) ran circa 2003. We reprint it here with our own title added, and the constructor's original clues (Note: the 40-Across clue was accurate as of the early 21^st century, but is now obsolete).
