Multi-photon Ionization of Neat Solvents Yields Neat Results
Recent research from the groups of Professors Sanford Lipsky and David A Blank.
A team of researchers led by Professors Sanford Lipsky and David Blank has demonstrated the unique behavior of isooctane when it is photoionized by multiple photons. The group pummeled the sample with laser intensities ranging from 7 to 407 Terawatts/cm2, and observed that the sample exhibits a periodic behavior in which it preferably ionizes with three, four, and five photons. The group then measured the time scales required for the ejected electrons to return to the ionized solvent molecules under these high irradiance conditions.
