Leopold group research featured in C&E News
U of M Chemistry professor Doreen
Leopold and current
and former group members Steve Miller, Tim Marcy and Evan Millam have
established that ethylene is cyclized to benzene by gas-phase niobium.
This reaction has been inferred previously, but direct
spectroscopic evidence had been missing until now. The research
suggests that "even the smallest of metal species may possess powerful
catalytic potential." This research was published in Journal of the
American Society (2007, 129, 3482), and featured in the March 19
issue of Chemical and Engineering News.
