Wayland E. Noland and Robert L. Ferm Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant awards for the 2007-2008 Academic Year

It is with pleasure that I announce the winners of the Wayland E. Noland and Robert L. Ferm Outstanding Graduate Teaching Assistant awards for the 2007-2008 Academic Year. First let me both acknowledge and thank Professor Noland for making funds available for the Outstanding Organic TA Award, which is being given for the first time. We were fortunate that many excellent nominations were received but, unfortunately, funding only permitted one of each award to be given. Therefore, five Honorable Mentions were given in addition to the two Teaching Assistants named as recipients of the awards.

The winner of the Wayland E. Noland Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award is:
Susan Brown – One of Susan’s Chemistry 2311 students wrote that, based on past experience, she “had concluded that chemistry lab was boring and confusing – simply a hoop to jump through to attain my degree. Susan changed all that.” The student went on to comment “I now find myself missing lab and, gulp, chemistry.” Another student comments “Susan was more than a great TA all semester. She was extremely knowledgeable and her pre-lab discussions were very clear and precise. I feel like she should be a model for other TAs.”
The winner of the Robert L. Ferm Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award is:
Yu-Shen Lin – Yu-Shen served as a TA for Chem. 1021 during both the fall and spring semesters. His students uniformly praised his performance as a TA with comments such as “has been an exceptional chemistry TA,” “knows how to interact with all of the students and encourages everyone to do well,” “makes time more enjoyable, encouraging students to think about topics in more depth,” and “his enthusiasm makes me excited to do the labs.” His students also gave him high marks for his ability to answer questions, his great sense of humor and the timely help and feedback he provided.
Students receiving an Honorable Mention for the Wayland E. Noland award are:
Erik Goebel (for Chem. 2311)
Erick Leggans (for Chem. 2311)
Students receiving an Honorable Mention for the Robert L. Ferm Award are:
Lucas Fiedler (for Chem. 1021)
Nicholas Frost (for Chem. 2111)
Bo Wang (for Chem. 1021)

I hasten to add that these individuals also received many glowing comments from their students and they as well as the other nominees certainly reflect well on our department.

Please join me in congratulating the recipients of these awards as well as those receiving honorable mention.

Professor Gary R. Gray
Morse-Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor and Vice-Chair
