7 December 2006
All interested individuals are invited to a Town Hall Meeting to discuss Phase 2 of the Kolthoff renovation which will begin in a few days. Information will be provided and your questions will be answered. Occupants of the "new" 3rd floor (old 1st floor) are especially encouraged to attend since Phase 2 will occur directly above your labs/offices and will occasionally interrupt your activities.
We will meet on:
THURSDAY, DECEMBER 14, 2006
1:00 - 2:00 P.M.
231 SMITH HALL

13 November 2006 Conference Rooms
Conference rooms 379 and 481 will be unavailable during Phase 2 of the Kolthoff renovation. One new conference room, 283, will become available at the end of Phase 1.

Therefore, Room 481 will be turned over to the contractors when Room 283 becomes available, approximately December 1. At that time our room reservation web site will be updated to remove 481 and to add 283. These two rooms are approximately the same size and will have the same features, i.e., they are interchangeable. Reservations made for 481 on December 1 and later will automatically be transferred to Room 283.

However, Room 379 has no new counterpart during Phase 2. We will continue occupying 379 through the end of finals, December 20, 2006. Reservations which have been made subsequent to 12/20/06 will have to be moved to some other conference room in Kolthoff or Smith Halls. Note that 168 Kolthoff will remain available as a conference room during Phase 2.

17 October 2006 KOLTHOFF HALL COMPLETE ELECTRICAL OUTAGE
SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 4 and SUNDAY, NOVEMBER 5

At 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, November 4, electrical service to Kolthoff Hall will be interrupted for renovation-related work. A portion of the building will be without electrical power for approximately 2 hours only. The remainder of the building will be without electrical power until approximately Sunday noon, November 5. University and contract electricians are currently determining which parts of Kolthoff will have a 2 hour outage and which will be without power for both days. As soon as I receive that information, I will let you know.

I have heard from a number of research groups concerning the items in their labs which must be supplied with emergency power during this outage. A file with this information is attached. Please review it and, if your equipment is not on this list, please reply to this email (reply to everyone on this list) with a request that it be added. Please limit your requests to only those items which absolutely need power to avoid damage or lengthy research delays.

The floor plans also attached to this email are for use by UofM and contract electricians to pinpoint the areas of concern presented to date.

Other items affected/not affected by this outage:

Building Heat = No heat. Pumps will be out
Phone Service = Will be available
Ethernet Service = Will not be available
Cold Water = Will be available
Hot Water = Will not be available (don't say it!)
Compressed Air = Will not be available
House Vacuum = Will not be available
House Nitrogen = Will be available
Fume Hoods = For sure will be out for 2 hours; may come back on after that. More info later.

16 October 2006 Kolthoff Air Ductwork
The Kolthoff renovation project includes the cleaning of supply air ductwork. The company performing this task is Mavo Systems. They have been working on supply fan SUP014 and will finish that fan this afternoon/evening.

At approximately 6:00 p.m. this evening, supply fan SUP014 will return to service and cleaning of ductwork supplied by fan SUP002 will commence with the following Mavo personnel:

Micah Raffety (supervisor - 612.310.4916)
Armando Molina
Cory Sawrey
Jeremy Blaisdell

From 6:00 p.m. until 12:30 a.m. the following morning, beginning tonight, October 16, through Friday, October 20, they will be cleaning the interior of supply ductwork served by fan SUP002. Therefore, fan SUP002 will be shut down during these periods.

Fan SUP002 serves the following labs:

50 - 58, 70G, 72 - 78
P160
150-155, 184 - 192

During this outage, fume hoods in these labs will continue to operate,
although at diminished efficiency because of reduced make-up air. If fume
hood use is necessary during this outage, keep the lab doors to the hallway
open to provide a source of make-up air. When not working in a hood, please
keep its sash down.

NOTE: PART OF THIS CLEANING INVOLVES THE USE OF CLEANING AGENTS. YOU MAY NOTICE AN "ORANGE" OR "CITRUS" ODOR AS THIS CLEANING PROGRESSES.

16 October 2006 Kolthoff Progress
Phase 1 of the Kolthoff renovation is on track and is scheduled to be completed on November 29. In early December some research groups will begin moving into the renovated Phase 1 space and others will move into swing space in Smith Hall and in the 2nd & 3rd floor teaching labs in the bridge of Kolthoff. These teaching labs will move into 349 Smith and to the BioScience Tower on the St. Paul campus.

Below is a list of the upcoming moves. Please understand that:

1) the dates are still estimates. Even though the project is on track we are still 6.5 weeks from estimated completion and it is too soon to say, with absolute certainty, when these moves will take place.

2) some of the moves are taking place earlier than December because the swing space is available sooner. Moving some groups earlier will allow asbestos abatement in the vacated labs to begin earlier.

The list of research group moves in alphabetical order:

Arriaga: Lab 490 moves to group's research space, basement of Kolthoff. 12/4 - 12/6.

Barany: moves to 406, 407, 408 Smith. Now through November 17.

Biogroup: moves out of 498 into 460A (tissue culture) and 419 Smith. 12/4 - 12/6.

Forsyth: to 350, 355, 365 Kolthoff. 12/11 - 12/15.

Gladfelter: to newly renovated 184, 185, 187 Kolthoff. 12/4 - 12/6.

Haynes: to 297, 297A, 297B Kolthoff. 11/1 - 11/3.

Kass: to 406, 409, 409A Smith. 12/7 - 12/11. Lab 292 Kolthoff remains operational during Phase 2.

Lecturers: to newly renovated (sort of) 181 Kolthoff. 12/21.

Que: to newly renovated 161 - 183 Kolthoff. 12/4 - 12/6

Stein: 2nd floor Kolthoff labs to 250, 250A Kolthoff. 1/4 - 1/8/07

Teaching Labs:
266 to storage. 12/15
297, 297A,B to storage. 10/16-10/17
350,355,365 to 349. 12/4 - 12/8
278,283,284 to storage. 12/15 - 12/20
250, 250A to St. Paul. 12/18 - 12/22
398 to 349 Smith. 12/18 - 12/22

Tolman: to newly renovated 263 - 267 Kolthoff. 12/4 - 12/6

Offices of Professors Barany, Gray, Tolman, and Ms. Hagberg will also move in late November or early December.

Attached is a "Guidelines for Moving" document which outlines, in general terms, who is responsible for what during this move. Please read it thoroughly and let me know if you have any questions.

WHAT TO DO:

If you have lab/office space in Phases 2, 3, or 4, please take some time to review these plans to make sure they include what you requested in your meetings with architects and engineers. If you have any questions or comments, please let me know. Thanks

29 September 2006 Plaza Walkway
The Plaza Walkway south of Kolthoff Hall Will be closed starting on Friday 9/29/06 for 6 weeks. Mortenson put signage up on both sides of the walkway Wed 9/27/06 notifying the public the walkway would be closed and directing them to use the sidewalk on the North side of Kolthoff.

Mortenson will install safety barricades and orange construction fencing to prevent the public from using the walkway. We plan to keep this walkway closed for 6 weeks, during the major work up on the roof.

Top-All has confirmed that they will be setting a crane up on Washington Ave. on Sat 9/30/06 to set roofing materials. Armstrong (Crane Co.) has coordinated with the City of Mpls for the 1 lane road closure. The kettle will be delivered either tomorrow or Sat and will be placed on the plaza walkway.

24 April 2006 Kolthoff Renovation Report Number One
The renovation of Kolthoff Hall will soon begin.  Construction is expected to take two years and will consist of four phases with the following anticipated timing:

  • Phase 1 floors P and S -- May '06 - Dec. '06
  • Phase 2 floors 2, 3, and 4 -- Dec. '06 - June '07
  • Phase 3 floors B and 1 -- June '07 - Oct. '07
  • Phase 4 bridge floors 2-4 -- Oct. '07 - Feb. '08

Mortenson has been selected as the general contractor with Harris Mechanical and Hunt Electric the mechanical and electrical subcontractors.

Vacating the plaza and street levels will begin on May 1 with construction slated to begin on June 1.  The month of May will be used by the University to remove asbestos and to check labs for the presence of mercury.

The Blank and Zhu labs on the north side of the basement level and our instrumentation facilities on the street level will undergo minimal renovation and will continue to operate during this project.  The four labs occupied by the Geology Department on the plaza level will also remain in operation during this renovation.

Shifts that affect the Departments teaching mission:

  • Office for first year graduate students will move to the Norris Hall gym during the entire period of renovation.
  • Advanced organic and inorganic laboratories will be taught in the Bio Sci Building in St. Paul from Spring ‘07 to Spring ‘08.
  • These vacated spaces will be used as swing space for the various research groups.

Phase 1 Moves - Street & Plaza Levels

  • Veglia moves to Hasselmo Hall
  • Dan MacEwan moves to 465 Kolthoff
  • Lecturers move to 281 Kolthoff
  • York moves to 101 Smith
  • Siepmann moves to 3rd floor Bio Sci, St. Paul Campus
  • 1st Year graduate student office moves to Norris Hall gym
Moves involved with Phase 2 - 4 will be announced at a later date.  However, other than the areas mentioned above, all research labs, teaching labs, and offices will move at least once; many will move more than once.

In preparation for the moves, it would be a good idea for Kolthoff-based research groups to begin the task of disposing of unwanted chemicals and equipment.   Unwanted chemicals must be disposed of using the normal hazardous waste process.  Junk equipment may be brought to the west basement hallway of Smith.  Please make sure all UofM inventory tags have been removed and given to Stan Bonnema with a short description of each item.  Inventory Services will be asked to remove these items from our inventory.  Also, do not dispose of equipment containing mercury or other hazardous compounds without first contacting Dawn Errede, Safety Officer, for guidance.  If a group needs a recycling hamper for paper, magazines, directories, etc., please contact Stan Bonnema at 4-2321.

Your patience and cooperation during this period will be greatly appreciated.
