RESEARCH INTERESTS: We use biomass to synthesize degradable replacements for plastic microbeads in personal care consumer products. These microbeads serve as rheological modifiers and exfoliants, making a soap or cream stiffer or better at scrubbing, and after use they can adsorb toxins from water in the environment. Many beads are captured in the water treatment process, and the rest harmlessly degrade.
