Forsooth, It's a Boy Forsyth!

by Michael Shteyman and George Barany

This "late-week level" puzzle was presented to my friends and colleagues, Karin Musier-Forsyth and Craig Forsyth, a few weeks before the birth—at 4:30 p.m. on November 24, 2003—of their son. The Forsyths left the University of Minnesota Department of Chemistry at the end of 2006 to join the Ohio State faculty in Columbus, Ohio, The photo to the right was taken in the Fall of 2015. After completing the puzzle (spoiler), learn more about the puzzle by clicking here for our "midrash."

To view or download the puzzle in PDF format, click here (two pages) or here (one page, for those with good eyesight); here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. Furthermore, there is a "trick" to the puzzle that may confuse inexperienced solvers—if that describes you, please click here instead for an easier version.
