We Mean Joe Green

by George Barany and Friends

This music-themed "mid-week level" tribute puzzle (17x17) was released on October 10, 2013, the bicentennial of the birth of this puzzle's honoree (pictured to the right). After completing the puzzle (spoiler) you may read about the honoree's life here (or just Google any of the myriad theme answers in the puzzle), learn about an American Joe Greene here, and particularly enjoy watching this YouTube clip (which I stumbled on from this opera site posting)—these taken together may also give you some understanding of this puzzle's title. This puzzle was blogged by Alison Young at Minnesota Public Radio (click here), and was mentioned in the last paragraph of this blog posting by C.C. Burnikel.

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. The construction, cluing, and test solving of this puzzle was a true team effort, and I thank (in alphabetical order) Marcia Brott, Noam Elkies, Dan Feyer, Michael Hanko, Brent Hartzell, Martin Herbach, Nancy Herther, Marjorie Russel, Carl Voss, and Tom Williams for their musical scholarship and mastery of the cruciverbal arts.
