Covert Operations

by George Barany and Kurtis Scaletta

This Thursday-ish puzzle paid tribute, in an usual manner, to a notable 70th anniversary observed on its date of release (pictorial hint to the right). The eleven theme entries for this puzzle are marked with an asterisk (*); they have been clued in a style (30-Across) favoured across the pond. Can you figure out the theme? Our "midrash"—which is embargoed until August 1, 2014—will explain all.  E-mail barany@umn.edu if you can't wait! Update: This puzzle appeared in the June 2014 issue of Natural Selections, as accessed here.
