Jesuit Who Has Chemistry

by Jorge B. y Amigos

This "Thursday level" puzzle was constructed and optimized quickly, within days of getting some breaking news, by the same group responsible (a month earlier) for Going Gentile Into That Good Night. We tried unsuccessfully to get it to appear in a mainstream venue, and now are back to our samizdat methods.

Short(z)ly before we posted our versions of this puzzle, the April 2, 2013 New York Times ran an Ian Livengood puzzle on the same theme. After completing this puzzle (spoiler), click here for that puzzle, and here and here for its solution as blogged respectively by Amy Reynaldo and Rex Parker. Also, one of us has a brother whose name brings to mind the names Charles Darwin selected for his second and third sons; close the evolutionary loop by clicking here (see second paragraph), here, and here.

Click here to view or download the "main" puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. Click here for an alternate tamer ("early-week level") version of the puzzle, here for the puz file, here to download it as an ipuz file, here for interactive play, and here for the solution.
