Elba Was He ...

by George Barany, Michael Hanko, Martin Herbach, and Tom Williams

This "mid-week level" puzzle paid tribute to one of the most important political figures in the 20th century (pictorial hint to the right), soon after a widely-noted personal milestone that was (spoiler) eerily coincident with the world-wide rollout of a major motion picture. You may also want to read this long, serious overview from the pages of the New York Times, as well as this brief piece from the Onion.

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution.  IMPORTANT: After completing the puzzle, rearrange the six circled letters to spell the name of 33-Across's best-known wife.  We appreciate a last-moment look-through from Ben Jones, who OK'd the concept and made some good suggestions.
