Friday Fun

by Professor George Barany's Chem 1905 Class (Friday, Fall 2013)

This "mid-week level" puzzle was developed and clued by Professor Barany's freshman seminar class "Science in the News" (Friday, Fall 2013).  The photo on the right is a class picture, taken on the last day of instruction, with sub-zero external temperatures. Students who are honored in the puzzle were chosen solely based on the number of letters in their full names, as well as symmetry considerations.

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution, which includes a key to "who's who" in the photo. We thank Steve Bachman, Nancy Herther, and Marjorie Russel for beta testing that confirmed the difficulty level and ensured that even solvers unfamiliar with the names of students in the class would have a fair chance to complete the puzzle.
