Go Gophers!

by George Barany, Brent Hartzell, and Karen Kaler

This "mid-week level" sports-themed puzzle [23x15; unusually shaped grid meant to be evocative of a gridiron] was released in the Fall 2014, but many might say it is timeless (pictoral hint to the right). After completing the puzzle (spoiler), learn more about its theme by initially clicking here, and then following the further links.

Click here (two pages) or here (one page, for those with good eyesight) to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. We are indebted to Martin Herbach for astute beta testing and several terrific clue suggestions, and to Alex Vratsanos for interesting discussions about the theme.
