Goldy Oldie

by Tom Pepper / Edited by George Barany

This "mid-week level" sports-themed puzzle with a definite local flavor should be as timeless as the entity it memorializes (somewhat misleading pictorial hint to the right). After completing the puzzle (spoiler), listen to this and this, and read this explanation of 43-Across and for several other traditions referenced herein. You may also be inspired to try this related puzzle.

Click here to view or download the "main" puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. Click here for an alternate version of the puzzle, here for the puz file, here for interactive play, and here for the solution. All five theme entries are the same, but about 30% of the answer words are different.

We thank Christopher Adams, Steve Bachman, Ralph Bunker, John Child, Todd Gross, Katherine Halpern, Brent Hartzell, Martin Herbach, Theresa Horan, Arlene Romoff, Alex Vratsanos, Ned White, and Brad Wilber for their enthusiastic and perceptive suggestions upon beta testing several versions of this puzzle.
