Kelly's Hero

by Donna Huryn and George Barany

Some years ago, Donna Huryn and I realized that we had a number of mutual interests, one being an appreciation of peptide chemistry, and a second being enjoyment of crossword puzzles. The "mid-week level" puzzle that follows is a result of a collaboration between us and was constructed for the occasion of Professor Jeff Kelly, from the Scripps Research Institute, receiving a prestigious award at the 2012 Spring Meeting of the American Chemical Society. The puzzle honors someone we both admire, as does Jeff Kelly (hence the title "Kelly's Hero"). Several of our friends, including Charles Deber, Andrea Carla Michaels, and Jeff Winkler, provided invaluable feedback on earlier drafts. We hope that you enjoy the puzzle, learn something from it, and pass it on to others who may appreciate it. After completing the puzzle (spoiler), click here to read our "midrash."

Click here to view or download this puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution.
