Nine Decades of the Central Science

by George Barany and Friends

This Sunday-sized commissioned puzzle commemorated the 90th anniversary of Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), the weekly newsmagazine of the American Chemical Society, and was published on page 83 of the September 9, 2013 issue [reproduced below, and available here in PDF format]. Note that C&EN established this website for the puzzle, which includes invaluable further links in a column headlined "More On This Story."

Click here (two pages) or here (one page, for those with good eyesight) to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); and here for the solution. Please note that the version on this site differs slightly from what was published in the magazine (and appears below), due to some minor glitches found and fixed after the anniversary issue went to press.

From our team, we thank Erik Agard, Jeff Aubé, Marcia Brott, Richard Caldwell, Jeff Chen, Charles Deber, Noam Elkies, Dan Feyer, Jed Fisher, Lloyd Fricker, Michael Hanko, Brent Hartzell, Martin Herbach, Karen Kaler, Ken Leopold, Sandy Lipsky, Andrew Meyers, Alex Vratsanos, and Letitia Yao for a myriad of contributions, ranging from test solving the puzzle to identifying problem areas to recommending spiffier and more accurate clues for many of the answer words. From C&EN, Susan Ainsworth shepherded the process from inception to publication, while Celia Arnaud, Rudy Baum, Emily Bones, Rob Bryson, Sarah Everts, Bethany Halford, Mitch Jacoby, Stephen Ritter, Sophie Rovner, Ann Thayer, Alexander Tullo, and Lauren Wolf each contributed some combination of ideas, expertise, and test solving.
