Happy Birthday, 49-Across!

by 49-Across's 13-Down

This "mid-week level" puzzle was constructed to honor a special personal occasion in the life of its honoree, who was photographed more than a quarter of a century ago (see right side). After completing one or both versions of the puzzle (spoiler), you may learn more about their subject by clicking here, and more about 20-Across by solving another puzzle.

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. Also, for an earlier version that has some harder words but is a pangram, click here for the puzzle, here to solve interactively and here for the solution. Thanks to Michael Hanko and Martin Herbach for test solving on very short notice, and for nixing the original clue for 12-Down, which was: Astronomer Royal Sir George (1801-1892). Additional suggestions from Noam Elkies were much appreciated.
