Club Rex

by George Barany and Friends

This "mid-week" difficulty puzzle was inspired by the goings-on at one of the major blogs for discussing New York Times crossword puzzles ... and anything else of interest to its host or its commentariat. After completing the puzzle (spoiler), learn more about its five theme entries by clicking (in same order as the puzzle) here, here, here, here, and here. Had the symmetries worked out differently, we would have also included the subject of our pictorial hint (see right of this paragraph).

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution. The puzzle team was drafted by yours truly, following which John Child, Noam Elkies, Michael Hanko, Brent Hartzell, and Martin Herbach beta tested it and made several invaluable suggestions that improved the fill and clues.
