Alumnus receives national award

Alumnus Thomas Guggenheim, Ph.D., received a prestigious award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable in Washington, D.C. Guggenheim earned his doctorate in chemistry in 1983, under the tutelage of Paul Gassman. He is a process chemist working on a variety of projects in the ULTEMĀ® Polyetherimide Resin Business for SABIC Innovative Plastics.

Guggenheim was a key member of ULTEM's technology team that won the 2011 Most Valuable Pollution Prevention MVP2 award from the National Pollution Prevention Roundtable. This award-winning project involved turning a waste stream that was incinerated into a commercial grade of sodium nitrite, significantly reducing the amount of fuel, water, and carbon dioxide emissions related to the production of ULTEM resin.
