Alex Nicol receives 'best in session' symposium award

Alex Nicol was awarded "Best in Session" in the paper presentation group at the 24th Winchell Undergraduate Research Symposium, that was conducted by the Minnesota Academy of Science, Saturday, April 21, at St. Olaf College in Northfield.

Alec's award-winning symposium presentation focused on Synthesis and Characterization of Organo-modified Mesoporous Silica Nanoparticles.

Alec is a sophomore chemistry/biochemistry double major. He is an undergraduate in the lab of Professor Christy Haynes, working with graduate student mentors Katie Hurley and Yu-Shen Lin to synthesize multifunctional mesoporous nanoparticles. His work is supported, in part, by a competitive Undergraduate Research Opportunity Program (UROP) award that he earned in 2011-12.
