KARE-11 highlights Energy and U & Math & Science Family Fun Fair

Energy and U, a popular Department of Chemistry outreach program, is featured at the Math & Science Family Fun Fair on Saturday, November 13. KARE-11 television highlights Energy and U and previews the fair at 6:20 a.m. Friday, November 12.

Energy and U will have two shows, at 1 p.m. and 3 p.m., during the Family Fun Fair. Chemistry Associate Professors David Blank and Christy Haynes and Joe Franek, the chemistry department's lecture demonstration director, will conduct the show.

With an information slide show set to music, and some demonstrations that include loud explosions, bright flashes, and flames, Energy and U shows are fun, engaging, and educational. Energy and the U programs are themed around the different forms of energy, particularly, chemical energy. The purpose is to get young people excited about and interested in science.

Blank and Professor Marc Hillmyer from the Department of Chemistry, and Professor Frank Bates, head of the Department of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science, created Energy and U in 2006. Franek created many of the demonstrations for the show. Since 2006, the scientists have presented their show to thousands of young people.
