Professor Wissinger shares expertise on green chemistry

Recent research from the research group of Professor

Professor Jane Wissinger, organic laboratory director, shares her green chemistry expertise at the Association for the Advancement of Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE) 2015 Conference and Expo, October 25-28.

Wissinger will participate in a panel discussion, “Using Green Chemistry to Introduce and Promote Sustainability in the Chemistry Curriculum and Profession," at 11:20 a.m. Tuesday, October 27. Panelists will discuss ongoing work in the chemistry community to bring green chemistry into institutional sustainability objectives, and to introduce green chemistry into Science Technology Engineering & Math degree programs to better prepare chemistry students to design environmentally conscious, healthier products and processes. Wissinger will discuss techniques and approaches for introducing green chemistry into the organic chemistry laboratory courses. She will give examples of how classic experiments were replaced with greener versions, and how an overall curriculum content reform was designed to instill a green and sustainable mindset in the diverse student population served.

Professor Wissinger will also present a poster, “Sustainable Polymers in the Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratory,” during a poster session, Monday, October 26, from 2:30 p.m. to 4 p.m.
