BioMADE announced 9 new projects totaling $20.6 Million to advance bioindustrial manufacturing innovation and education. BioMADE is a Manufacturing Innovation Institute sponsored by the U.S. Department of Defense, launched in 2021.
“The projects announced today will elevate the commercial readiness of bio-products, optimize chemicals for bio-derived foams and adhesives, and develop state-of-the-art methodology for fermenter design that will accelerate technology commercialization across the bioindustrial manufacturing industry,” said Dr. Douglas Friedman, BioMADE CEO.
Valerian Materials was founded in 2015 by Dr. Kechun Zhang, Dr. Frank Bates, and Dr. Marc Hillmyer as a spin-off company based on research out of the NSF Center for Sustainable Polymers. They were selected as one of four Technology and Innovation Projects in the initiative.
Valerian Materials will lead a project in partnership with National Corn-to-Ethanol Research Center, the University of Minnesota, and Scientific Bioprocessing to optimize the fermentation and downstream processing of betamethylvalerolactone, eventually incorporating it into sustainable and bio-derived elastomers, foams, and adhesives.
