A Cryptic Tribulation

by an unknown setter; annotated by Ralph Bunker and Chris Philpot

A recent article in the Daily Telegraph described a puzzle published on January 13, 1942 that was supposedly used to recruit code breakers at Bletchley Park during World War II. Parts of this puzzle were used at the official website for The Imitation Game to promote the movie, and the full puzzle was used in a contest advertisement that appeared on page 25 of The New York Times on the eve of the movie's USA release. Entertainment Weekly published an article with the headline "Can you beat the clock and solve the famous 'Imitation Game' crossword puzzle?"

Click here to view or download the puzzle in PDF format; here to download it as a puz file; here to download it as an ipuz file [requires the free Puzzazz app to solve]; here to solve the puzzle interactively (thanks to Jim Horne); here for the solution, and here for the commentary on this specific puzzle, as well as on cryptic puzzles in general. In the given link, use up and down arrow keys to sequence through the answers. Note that the present web page is a mirror (with slight additional edits) of the original version posted at this runt.puz site.
