CSP Investigator Paul Dauenhauer gave the Dourdeville Lecture at Brown University on his research in developing new technologies for converting biomass into usable materials. The Dana M. Dourdeville Lecture on Engineering in Service to Society highlights speakers whose work demonstrates the profound and transformative impact of the engineering discipline on society.
Dauenhaur explains how using biomass – materials derived from organic, renewable resources – to produce traditionally petroleum-based materials such as plastics, rubber, and detergents reduces the environmental toll from extracting petroleum from the earth, the limited biodegradability of the products, and the energy associated with their production. His lecture “Imagining a Fully Sustainable Carbon Future of Materials and Energy” discusses opportunities for the development and production of sustainable polymers and their advantages over petroleum-based polymers.
